This single-vineyard Barolo grows on a hillside facing from south to south-east over quite unique scenery in Perno, an old isolated outlying district of Monforte d’Alba which has almost become a village in its own right. Here the sandy-clayey soil is formed deep down of very compact layers of grey marl, alternated with layers of sandstone incorporated into deposits of reddish-yellow sand. The traditional style fermentation lasts around 15-20 days and is followed by 36 months in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks, bringing the best out of the elegance and class provided by this very special corner of the Langhe.
The result is a very open, fragrant, appealing wine with a powerful, yet well-balanced bouquet. Deep, bright ruby red in colour, it has a pervasive nose showing hints of roses, raspberries and underbrush, slight vanilla and liquorice overtones, and notes of amaretto and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with tannins that are very dense and biting, yet never aggressive, showing the wine’s considerable breadth and consistency. It makes a perfect match for meat and game, and its fragrance is set off perfectly by typical Piedmontese-style antipasti.
